Biblical Context
Jonathan's soul is knit to David; he loves him as his own and they covenant together, with Jonathan giving David his robe and weapons.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within this text I hear the inner dialogue of two states of consciousness becoming one. Jonathan is the loyal, protective self that refuses a prior separation; David is the aspirant who seeks the higher order. They forge a covenant—the inward decision that the higher vision governs all action. When Jonathan strips himself and gives David his robe, garments, sword, bow, and girdle, he is not merely trading clothing; he is declaring that the old self-image yields to the new alignment. In Neville's terms, God is the I AM within me, and the two souls are actually two facets of one I AM consenting to be governed by a single purpose. The bond is formed in awareness, so external life follows as a consequence of inner agreement. The scene invites me to revise: what old garments am I still wearing that keep me separate from my desired state? What loyalty must I covenant with today to feel my life rearranged by inner unity?
Practice This Now
Assume the covenant now: close your eyes and affirm, I am joined with my higher self; I give up the old garments of limitation and accept the new attire of power and love. See Jonathan hand over the robe and imagine your outer life rearranging to match this inner covenant.
