Inner Commandment Realized

1 Kings 20:38-43 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read 1 Kings 20 in context

Scripture Focus

38So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
41And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
42And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.

Biblical Context

A hidden prophet warns the king that letting go of a man God appointed for destruction invites judgment. The king’s own verdict confirms this inner law of accountability and obedience.

Neville's Inner Vision

Picture the king as your outward self moving through the battlefield of life. The ashes on the prophet's face symbolize the humility and concealment of the inner voice that speaks truth as you most resist hearing it. When the prophet says, 'Keep this man,' and 'if by any means he be missing, thy life shall be for his life,' it is a poetic image of how your central state must protect the parts of your consciousness God hath set apart. To let go of that man is to abandon a portion of your inner world assigned to utter destruction; but the law is clear: your life and your people, your entire field of experience, reflect the fidelity to that inner decree. The king's private realization—'So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it'—is a reminder that judgment is already enacted within your state of awareness. Thus, the call is to awaken to your inner command and to act as if you are faithfully maintaining it, regardless of appearances. When you do, the inner and outer align, and Samaria—your whole self—returns to harmony.

Practice This Now

Assume the inner decree is already kept intact; feel it real in your chest as you silently declare, 'I keep what God appoints to utter destruction.'
