The Quiet Presence Within
1 Kings 19:11-13 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
Elijah is told to stand on the mount before the LORD. The dramatic signs—wind, earthquake, and fire—do not reveal God; after these, a still small voice appears, and Elijah responds by covering his face and listening for guidance.
Neville's Inner Vision
On the mount, Elijah seeks God through spectacular outward signs—the wind that rends the mountains, the earthquake, the fire—yet God is not in these phenomena. The still, small voice that follows is the symbol of the I AM within, the ordinary awareness that animates every moment. In Neville’s terms, the mount represents the mind, while the stormy signs are the restless thoughts and images that pretend power but fail to reveal the divine. When the voice speaks, it invites a shift from identity rooted in outward perception to an inner recognition: the self that stands in the entering in of the cave—the place of true awareness where the question ’What doest thou here?’ becomes a prompt to revise the self. By heeding that stillness, Elijah discovers that the power he seeks already exists as the awareness he is. This inward listening transforms action from anxious seeking into faithful alignment with the I AM—God within—the true source of all guidance and courage.
Practice This Now
Practice: in a quiet moment, assume that I AM is standing on your mental mount and listen for the still small voice. Then revise any stormy narrative into a calm sense of presence and feel it as real.
