The I Am Confronts Idolatry

1 Kings 18:17-18 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read 1 Kings 18 in context

Scripture Focus

17And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
18And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.
1 Kings 18:17-18

Biblical Context

Ahab accuses Elijah of troubling Israel. Elijah replies that the people have forsaken the LORD's commandments and chased Baalim.

Neville's Inner Vision

Elijah’s dialogue is not two men on a hill, but two states within my own consciousness. When the outer world names me as the cause of trouble, it is simply my awareness re-presenting a belief that I have broken the inner law. The real 'commandments of the LORD' are my inner alignments, my covenant with the I AM. The charge that I 'trouble Israel' dissolves as I realize the trouble was not out there, but in my sense of separation from God. The moment I hear the accusation, I can revise it by recognizing that I never left the commandments; I merely believed myself separated from the consciousness that keeps order, loyalty, and true worship. The Baalim are the idolatrous habits of appetite and fear that tempt me to rely on forms rather than the living I AM within. As I re-enter obedience inwardly and refuse to exalt the ego’s image, my outer world quiets, and the true kingdom is restored in me.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: In a moment of quiet, assume the role of Elijah within your own mind and declare, 'I have kept the commandments, and the I AM within me governs all.' Then breathe into the feeling of covenant until the sense of trouble dissolves.
