Inner Counsel and the Yoke

1 Kings 12:8-14 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read 1 Kings 12 in context

Scripture Focus

8But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
13And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;
14And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Biblical Context

Rehoboam rejects the elders’ counsel and follows the impulsive young men, promising a heavier yoke. This rash choice brings hardship and divides the kingdom.

Neville's Inner Vision

Within every king there sits an I AM that must hear true counsel. The old men are the steady memories of wisdom, the inner law of discipline; the young men are the restless desires of pride and fear that want to prove themselves. When Rehoboam heeds the latter, he puts a yoke on the land that he believes is needed to be stronger. You see the inner shift as a decree you fashion in your life. In Neville’s terms, every outward event is a state of consciousness sustained by belief. By neglecting the mature voice you inhabit a harsher self-image and invite a split in your inner life. The remedy is to assume the mature, wise state now: invite the old counsel into your present awareness, cultivate humility, discernment, and love of truth as your power. When you revise your self-image to align with wisdom, the yoke loosens and the inner kingdom resumes its unity.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and declare that I AM is king of your inner realm. Imagine the elder counselors guiding a lighter, wiser choice and feel the burden ease as you revise your self-image to align with that inner voice.
