Love-Driven Inner Obedience
1 John 5:3 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read 1 John 5 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The verse states that the love of God is shown by keeping His commandments, and that such commandments are not burdensome.
Neville's Inner Vision
Suppose the verse is not a set of rules imposed from outside, but the inward recognition of your own I AM affirming a law of love. The 'love of God' is the I AM within you, faithfully keeping faith with the inner commandment that corresponds to your true nature. When you identify with this inner law, keeping commandments ceases to be a burden; it becomes the natural movement of consciousness that loves what it is. Your awareness is the Spirit that chooses to align with the principle of love, and in that alignment, what you do outwardly becomes effortless, not grievous. The commandments are not external duties to fear but inner patterns of harmony already established in your being. If you feel resistance, revise your idea of the commandments as commands imposed from outside; instead, assume you are already the kind of person who lives in obedience because you ARE love. In that settled state, every situation reveals the right course as the normal expression of you.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Close your eyes and assume the state, 'I keep God's commandments because I am Love.' Feel this truth as present consciousness and revise any sense that obedience is burdensome until it moves as a natural, light rhythm within you.
