Inner Love in Deed Realized
1 John 3:16-18 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read 1 John 3 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The passage states that God’s love is known because Christ laid down his life for us, and we should lay down our lives for others; true love is shown through deeds, not merely words.
Neville's Inner Vision
The love of God is your living state of awareness. When John speaks of Jesus laying down his life, interpret it as the surrender of the small self and its attachments, a shift into a higher consciousness that serves the brethren. Wealth or “this world’s good” becomes the inner resource of generosity available to those who operate from a sense of abundance rather than lack. To see a brother in need and withhold compassion is to deny the very God within; the inner love cannot dwell where generosity is shut away. Therefore let love awaken as the active truth—thoughts harmonized with deeds, words aligned with inner reality. The practice is to assume that such self-sacrificing action is already done: feel the wish fulfilled and let your inner state radiate as practical service. When the inner state is consistent with outward acts, the outer world becomes a faithful image of your inner truth, and love manifests in deed, not merely in speech.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Sit quietly and assume the feeling that you have already laid down your life for a brother—welcome compassion as your normal state. Then act today on one concrete need you notice, knowing the deed already reflects your inner truth.
