Inner Life of Love and Hatred
1 John 3:13-15 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read 1 John 3 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
In 1 John 3:13-15, John says not to be surprised by world hatred; true life comes through loving the brethren, while hatred signals spiritual death.
Neville's Inner Vision
Do not marvel that the world hates you, for the outer image mirrors the inner state you have accepted as real. When you say, 'We have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren,' you are naming a shift in consciousness: love is the life of God expressed as you. To love is to awaken to the I AM that animates all beings; hatred, even a subtle grudge toward a brother, is the psyche clinging to death, a murder of your own vibrancy. If you deny your brother, you deny your own life, for you and he are one in the divine imagination. The verse makes clear that hatred is not merely dislike; it is murder in the inner sense, and hence it denies eternal life abiding in you. Yet this is a door, not a condemnation: you can revise the moment by assuming a loving sight of the other as a facet of your own I AM image. Practically, you awaken by dwelling in the feeling of benevolence toward the brother, re-imagining him as God in expression within you, and allowing that living sense to saturate your mind.
Practice This Now
Assume the feeling of universal brotherhood for a few minutes tonight; revise a recent grievance by re-imagining the other as your own divine self, and feel the life of God flowing through both of you.
