Inner Light, Old and New Commandment

1 John 2:7-8 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read 1 John 2 in context

Scripture Focus

7Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
1 John 2:7-8

Biblical Context

The passage distinguishes an old commandment heard from the beginning and a new commandment that is true in both him and you, declaring that darkness has passed and the true light shines now.

Neville's Inner Vision

In Neville's reading, the 'old commandment' is the timeless law of love embedded in your original state of awareness. It points to an inner disposition you already carry, not a distant rule to perform. The 'new commandment' is the same truth now living in you—an awakening that the darkness of separation has passed and the true light of I AM consciousness shines within. 'In him and in you' signifies the inseparable unity of God and your awareness; the light you perceive outwardly is but the manifestation of the light already within. When you dwell in that consciousness, you revise your entire sense of self from lack to plenitude, and your world rearranges to reflect this inner light. The old and new commandments merge into one living law of love, endlessly present in your current experience and identity.

Practice This Now

Assume the truth that I AM is the light within you now; silently revise any sense of darkness by affirming 'I and the light are one' and 'I live the commandment of love this moment.'
