David is aided by captains from Manasseh who rally to his cause; they are mighty men of valor guiding the host.
Neville's Inner Vision
Notice that the chapter is not about external history; it is about your inner kingdom. The 'David' is your greater self awakening to rule. The 'captains of Manasseh'—Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, Zilthai—are the bold states of consciousness you choose to mobilize. They are not strangers; they are the distributive powers of your mind coordinated under one purpose. The 'band of the rovers' are fear and doubt pressing against your order. When these captains align with David, they become 'mighty men of valor,' not by force but by the decided posture of imagination in action; they are 'captains in the host' denotes leadership arising from within your own awareness, leading the army you call life. The practical meaning is simple: you must decide, in your imagination, that you already possess inner order and protection. Assume the end you desire, feel the confidence of a host under command, and let your inner captains move to complete the field. Your consciousness is the host; victory is the natural expression of a mind that rules itself with faith and obedience to its I AM.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the feeling that you already govern your inner state; mentally appoint the captains of Manasseh as your organizing powers and declare, 'I am king over this inner field.' Then revise any anxious thought by seeing it fall before the ordered advance of your host.
