Scripture Focus

17And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!
18And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
19And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
1 Chronicles 11:17-19

Biblical Context

David longs for a drink from the Bethlehem well; three mighty men fetch it with great risk, and he, recognizing their sacrifice, pours the water out to the LORD rather than drinking it himself.

Neville's Inner Vision

David's longing is not a mere craving for water, but a symbolic moment in the I AM's autobiography. The well of Bethlehem stands for the inner source of life—the living water of awareness available at the gate of your awareness. The three mighty men represent your three faithful faculties—courage, loyalty, and steadfast faith—drilling through the outer chaos (the Philistine host) to draw from the inner well. When they bring the water to David, he does not sink into a sensory feast; he pours it out to the LORD, recognizing that any outward nourishment is only meaningful when consecrated to the I AM. This is a masterful act of reverence: to acknowledge the life-energy offered by your inner workers and not to degrade it by ordinary consumption. In Neville's terms, David's refusal to drink is a decision to keep the energy aligned with divine ends rather than personal satisfaction. It proclaims that the state of awakened awareness is sufficient unto itself and that worthy acts of desire must be offered back to the Source. The inner scene then tests faith: do you trust the inner supply or attempt to possess it for ego's appetite?

Practice This Now

Imaginative Act: Close your eyes and feel that the Bethlehem water is the living energy of your inner life; picture three faithful faculties—courage, loyalty, faith—breaching your inner gates to fetch it, then pour the water back to the I AM with gratitude, declaring that energy is consecrated for divine ends, not personal appetite.
