The verse lists Ishmael's twelve sons, presenting a record of his generations.

Neville's Inner Vision

These lines are not a distant genealogy but a map of the inner man. 'These are their generations' announces the generation of your life arises from the state you occupy now. The twelve names—Nebaioth, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, Kedemah—are not external persons but inner dispositions shown in your present consciousness. Each name points to a quality that wants to be known in you when you dwell in the I AM. The 'sons of Ishmael' become your own inner family, a chorus of tendencies that can either divide or unite. When you awaken to the Presence of God as your awareness, these disparate movements bow to one sovereign reality. You are not subject to their gossip; you are the author who can revise them by assuming they are already present as one. In that light, the mind’s landscape shifts; the outer world mirrors the unity you accept within. Your community—family, work, and soul—flows from this single consciousness, and harmony replaces struggle as you claim the truth that God is the I AM behind all names.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and assume the I AM as your only reality; mentally declare that these twelve sons are your inner states now harmonized by one Spirit. Feel their unity and rest in the sensation that you already possess them.
