Neville Goddard begins by stating that the true meaning of Christ’s birth is internal rather than historical, urging listeners to awaken to the miraculous child born within each person. He traces the promise of the child from Genesis with Abraham through Moses, David, Isaiah, and the New Testament, showing scripture as an unfolding of divine purpose in individual consciousness. The lecture emphasizes that Christ symbolizes the awakening of divine love, wisdom, and power within the believer, culminating in unity with God. Personal anecdotes and correspondent dreams are used to illustrate the “great exam” of recognizing this inner transformation. He assures listeners they cannot fail this exam because the risen Christ reveals the only possible answer—love. Neville concludes by inviting the audience to experience the promise made flesh within, stating that the child of promise is the individual’s own spiritual birth.
Tonight’s subject is “The Miraculous Child.” It may not appeal to the world, because they are so fixed in their misconceptions of scripture, and there is no dead weight so heavy as that which is required to change man’s misconception of scripture. So tonight, I ask you to listen carefully, attentively, for “Though Christ a thousand times in Bethlehem be born, if he is not born in thee, thy soul is still forlorn.”
God participates in human history and is known in those through whom his timeless purpose is working in time. Right in this world of time his timeless purpose is unfolding. “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil.1:6). Jesus Christ appears symbolized as a child. The child is only a sign; he is not the child. When Christ appears, you are he. So you listen to one in whom his timeless purpose has been fulfilled. This promise of a child begins in Genesis, the first book in the Bible. It is given to one called Abraham. If you have been with me through the last few weeks, you know what I have said concerning Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the characters in scripture. They do not appear in any ancient Near Eastern work whatsoever, they’re only in scripture. They do not appear either as individuals or as tribes. These are the eternal states through which God passes in you as he unfolds his purpose in you. His purpose is to give himself to you as though there were no other in the world, just God and you, and finally only you. For you are he. That is the purpose.
The whole thing begins with the promise of a child. He promises Abraham to give him a child. Abraham laughed, Sarah laughed, because they were beyond the age of bearing a child. When the child was born, they called him Isaac, which means “he laughs.” Now, you think he was born of human stock. No, this child is a prototype of that which must be born. For all the ancient prophets were eschatological in their vision; and their visions are only about the end of days, the last days. It’s all eschatology; it’s all the doctrine of the very, very last things. So the child is a prototype. We next encounter this child in the name of Moses. The word Moses means…it is simply the ancient perfective of the Egyptian verb “to be born.” Something is to be born. We think it is a man. So she calls him Moses because he was drawn out of the water. You draw it out of the deep; something is coming out; something is to be born. So we think it’s a man.
We find this thing unfolding and unfolding, and we come to the point called David. “Go to my servant David, and you say to him, ‘When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your son after you, who shall come forth from your body. I will be his father, and he shall be my son’” (2Sam.7:12). You find the unfolding promise of the child. We move into Isaiah: “To us a child is born, a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Is.9:6). Here we find this promise unfolding and unfolding.
We find the very last book of the Old Testament still waiting for the son. If I am a father, where is my honor? “For a son honors his father. If then I be a father, where is my honor?” (Mal. 1:6). And now, the very first chapter of the New Testament begins with the fulfillment of the promise. Here he’s born, the child is born. And you’ve been taught to believe that some little child came into the world born of a woman who did not know a man. Hasn’t a thing to do with it. The child is born but “born not of blood nor of the will of man nor of the will of the flesh, but of God” (John 1:13)…something entirely different. Now he tells us this shall be a sign unto you. Blessed is she who believed that which she has heard, “that there shall be a fulfillment of those things which were spoken unto her from the Lord” (Luke 1:45). If one could but believe.
And then, they appeared to the shepherds of the field and said to them, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). And the shepherds said one to the other, “Let us go into Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened.” And they made haste, went into Bethlehem and found the babe, as they were told, wrapped in swaddling clothes. When you read these words, you think as you’ve been taught—I was taught it as a Christian—that this thing happened on earth; a little child, born of a woman as you and I were born, with this difference, she didn’t have a husband or didn’t know a man. Hasn’t a thing to do with that. It is a sign…“This shall be a sign unto you” that a Savior is born. The only Savior is God. “I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. And beside me there is no savior” (Is. 43:3,11). There’s only God. God became man and then he has to be born from man. I am both the root and the offspring of humanity personified as the eternal youth called David. I am the root and the offspring. The creator of humanity, becoming what I created, and bursting the shell; and then coming out transcending what I was prior to my fall into my own creation.
You listen to it carefully…I am telling you what I know from experience. The day will come when you will experience it. My days are at an end, they’re all over. My history in the human world is at an end, there’s no more. I have finished the race. I can say with Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness” (2Tim.4:7). There’s nothing else to do. All that he promised I have been experiencing within myself, every bit of it.
How would you know? Well, there are signs. Yet when it happens it happens so suddenly and happens without warning. Yet there are signs that come to all of us as we’re moving towards the end. I can say to all of you here, you are all at the end. I can’t say that to the world. I can say it to you, you are at the end. There isn’t a morning’s mail or a night that I leave here that doesn’t bring confirmation of this motion towards the end. Last lecture night, a lady left a letter, and then in the mail came a letter two days later…and listen to these letters. We have come only to fulfill scripture. The prophecy has not a thing to do with America as the prophets of the modern world will tell you. They are all about what the Bible is telling you what is going to happen to America or Russia or China. It hasn’t a thing to do with any secular history, nothing whatsoever. The Bible is simply the history of salvation. It hasn’t a thing to do with any land on the face of this earth. It’s all to do with you, who walk the lands of the world, that’s all that it’s about. Not about America, not about Russia, not about Europe, not about China or any other part of the world. So when all these so-called, self-appointed prophets rise and tell you about what they’re interpreting in scripture, may I ask you now, don’t listen to them. You are at the end.
Well, here are the letters. One lady writes, she said, “I live in Pasadena. I am fifty-nine years old. I did not complete college because I had two little sons and the demands of my family life were such that I could not complete college. ___(??) continue college. I had a dream, a recurrent dream that I must prepare for an exam. Then as the years progressed, the recurrent dream still persisted, only recently it’s been so urgent…the sense of immediacy. Then she capitalized the entire great exam—“I must be prepared for a GREAT EXAM.” Then she said, “Recently I saw history unfold before me, the whole thing unfolded as I closed my eyes. And then she said, I saw all these faces. There were no eyes in the sockets, just sockets, human faces but no eyes, like the great sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo. Then I saw in the midst of all these bodies an infant, a little babe, and he was smiling at me and he loved me. I felt as though he were in heaven and I here looking at this infant. And then recently I had this vivid dream, I had a son. Now, here I’m fifty-nine, no husband, and no one around, and I have this son, the most beautiful child imaginable. When I woke, I wondered how can this be?” Then she asked me, does it have any biblical significance?
Well, the significance in her dream is the “great exam.” If you’ve ever been on TV—I’ve never had the occasion to use it because I’ve always spoken extemporaneously. I have no notes, I don’t need notes. I could go on for hours and I don’t need one note from any person in this world to tell me what to say. I never lost a thought. Whether I’m on TV or radio, I’ve gone all through the night on one of these marathons, no notes. So I don’t need them. But there is in TV what is known as the “idiot sheet” and you see someone spieling and spieling and spieling so rapidly, and they’re looking right before their eyes. Under the camera there is a moving thing like a moving little bit of paper, and bold, bold type, and they’re reading off the entire thing. It’s called the idiot sheet. All the great commentators and all these profound wise men they’re reading the idiot sheet. And you think them so wise. The whole thing has been completely written for them by someone else. They are good readers. Someone wrote the entire news program and they just stand before the camera like some wonderful important individual…and there they are, reading the idiot sheet.
Well, let me say to this lady, I use that analogy only for a purpose. You are facing in the immediate future the great exam. You’ll be taken in Spirit right into the presence of the exalted Christ, the risen Christ. He will only ask you one question, “What is the greatest thing in this world?” Well, it’s just like reading the idiot sheet. It’s so obvious what is the greatest thing in the world because you’re looking at him. You’re looking at the embodiment of love. Not one thought in eternity could ever enter your mind but what you’re seeing, and you’re seeing the exalted Christ. Only one emotion permeates you and it is love. You can’t fail, my dear.
So you say you must study for it? You can’t fail. Right before you stands the exalted Christ who is the embodiment of love, infinite love. And so, when you answer it is automatic…you cannot fail. So put your heart at rest, you don’t have to study any more for the great exam. It will be automatic. When you look into the face of the risen Christ, you can’t think of anything but love. At that moment he embraces you, at that moment you are one with the body of Christ. And then the prophecy, “He will change our lowly bodies to be of one form with his glorious body” (Phil.3:21). Our translators cannot bring themselves to believe the literal words of scripture, so they translate it this way, “He will change our lowly bodies to be like…” It isn’t “like” at all. The literal meaning of the word, that Greek phrase, is “to be of one form with,” that’s what it is. You aren’t like him, you become him. In the end, there’s only one body, one God, one man…and you are he. So your lowly body is completely refashioned to be of one form with, not like, his glorious body. So I tell you, put your mind at rest. Your great exam has been answered. You will stand in his presence and you couldn’t in eternity think of anything but the right answer because you’re looking at him. You’re looking at the greatest thing in the world, the body of the risen Christ, the human form divine which is love.
Now another letter came in the mail and this from a gentleman. He said, “I came home on Monday night, I threw myself on the bed to relax for awhile, and I closed my eyes. I felt a little bit in a daze—not unconscious, but quite relaxed, in a daze, in a lovely dream. And while in this state, a blaze of light appeared before me. I forced myself not to open my eyes to see the cause of the light. The light persisted. Right before me, here is this light, with my eyes closed. I noticed in the middle of this light a pool of golden, liquid light is beginning to form. It’s pulsating, the whole thing pulsating. I noticed that it’s taking a form and the form it takes is that of a beautiful rose. It forms itself into a rose, and then the rose expands and expands and almost reaches the periphery of this vast area. I’m looking at the rose and then the rose itself begins to pulsate. Here’s a pulsing, living rose that came out of this golden, liquid light. And just as I’m looking at it, wondering what is next, I was called to dinner.” And he asks, “What does it mean?”
Well, in the 2nd chapter of the Songs of Solomon, “I am the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valleys” (verse 1). The 5th chapter implies…now in your letter you said it was a golden rose…the 5th chapter implies, because it likens it unto the lips—it doesn’t state that the rose must be red but lips usually are red. Nevertheless, it’s a rose. One translator can’t bring himself to believe it’s a rose, he calls it a crocus. Alright, a crocus is a lovely flower, beautiful flower, but it’s a rose, just as he saw it. So here is scripture unfolding in you. “I am the rose of Sharon”…who is I AM…well, that’s God. There’s nothing but God. So, I’m looking at it…he said, “Strangely enough the rose was not simply something put upon the golden, liquid light. It was not separate and it was not superimposed. The light just now formed into the rose.”
Now listen to the words, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12); also, “I am the rose of Sharon.” Well, Sharon means “prosperity; the straight, straight pathway, the right way.” But it means “prosperity”…and abundance when that rose appears in the consciousness of man, that’s what it means. Here is real, real abundance in the consciousness of man. Now abundance need not be measured in dollars and cents, although in the world of Caesar it will be, too, but in a sense of well-being that you’ve never known before, a sense of peace, a sense of rest, a sense of importance that you’ve never known before…all that is Sharon. The rose is God—he said, “I am the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valleys.”
So, I tell you everyone here is waking. To repeat, God participates in the history of man, actually participates, and is known in those through whom this working is taking place. God is working in you. That’s why the whole scripture is unfolding in you: “Scripture must be fulfilled in me…for all that is said about me has its fulfillment” (Luke22:37). “And beginning with Moses in the law and the prophets and the psalms, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27), not speaking of anything else. What does it matter if you were the king of kings on earth, lord of lords, and all these of the world, what would it matter?
I was sitting around yesterday around four. I had a seven o’clock dinner date, and so I had lots of time, and as is my custom I was reading the Bible. My wife, knowing we had a 7:00 date she goes to take a little rest prior to the dinner date. So, she was in the bedroom resting and I sat in my leather chair reading the Bible. I expected no one and suddenly I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. I was sitting in my underpants and my little sports jacket. Not knowing who it was—it could be some delivery man or something, I expected no one—I went to the door and to my surprise when I opened the door here stood a nun before me…at least she was dressed as one. So I apologize for my appearance, I said, “I’m awfully sorry that I am like this, but I wasn’t expecting anyone.”
She had a Bible in her hand, black robes all the way down to the ankles, white veil over her head, and all these beads around her neck, and all the things…and then papers in the Bible. She said, “I am a witness sent by God to you.” I said, “A message for me?” “Yes, a message for you.” “And what did God tell me or wants you to tell me?” Well, “the world is gone…it’s the devil, the devil is loose. There are millions of devils in the world, all by the great devil.” I said, “He could not have told me that because I stood in the presence of the risen Christ and he’s all love. And he plays all the parts. The only devil in the world is that God allows man such freedom that he can create the most horrible things in the world and God allows it. He will adjust it. As we reach certain imbalance he will bring it back into balance. But, he allows everything in this world, and you and I are simply creating; and God is not deceived—as you sow you reap. So you believe in devils? I don’t! There is no room in my world for the God that I know for a devil.”
“Oh,” she said, “Brother, brother, you must listen, you must listen, brother.” I said, “Alright” and she started giving me all this baloney about this devil and all the minions who are working for him to dethrone God. So I said to her…I told her a little anecdote that Frank Lloyd Wright always liked to pull on friends of his, and that is about two clerics. One said to the other, “There’s no need for us to quarrel. We’re both doing the Lord’s work, you in your way and I in his.” She looked at me. I don’t think she understood one word that I said. She wasn’t listening. She wanted me to listen, “Listen, brother, listen.” She didn’t hear one word. I could tell from her face there wasn’t any registration whatsoever of what I said to her.
And so, I said, “I’m awfully busy. You interrupted me reading the Word of God. I was reading the Word of God when you came and now I must go back and complete my study.” She went, mumbling down, “Listen, brother, listen.” You’ve got to listen, brother…listen to all of her junk about this awful, awful evil world of the devil in control, and poor God is helpless. He just can’t do a thing about it, and so she is going to get me on her side by fighting devils. And that thought came to me of Shelley’s, “He has awakened from the dream of life. ‘Tis we, who lost in stormy visions, keep with phantoms an unprofitable strife.” You fight devils, so you make more devils because you recognize them. What you recognize you perpetuate, you make it real in your world.
So here, all I can tell you is what I have experienced concerning scripture. This miraculous child is a fact. The day will come that everything said about this child you are going to experience. No one sees you…that moment when those who watch their flocks at night made a hasty journey to see the thing that had happened in Bethlehem. For they come…they come and they find the child. They know exactly whose child it is, and they call you by name. They will say, if your name is John, “Its John’s baby.” The others are amazed that you have a baby. Then they’ll pick it up and put it on the bed. You will raise that in your own arms and look into its lovely, heavenly face and speak some endearing term. Like Isaac, the word “he laughs,” the child will laugh. He laughs right into your face, the most heavenly laugh. And then the whole thing comes to an end. And you will know the reality of the child that was given to man as a sign that the Savior was born. And there’s only one Savior and the Savior is God. So, if the Savior is born, it is God who is born. He came down into man, and now he raises man by being reborn himself from man. So, I am the root and the offspring of David.
Now, this will drive it home for you. About a month ago…in fact last night the lady with whom we were out for dinner, she and her sister, and this lady was the one in the dream. And my friend, who is here tonight, his name is Jimmy…he does not know this lady. Her name is Vera. I’ve known her for years, back in New York City, when she was a dancer. She came to all of my meetings. She was born in Russia, came here at the age of thirteen, having trained as a ballerina in Russia then completed her training here, and was a dancer in New York City. Being a dancer myself ___(??) befriended, she came to all my meetings, she and her mother, and her two sisters. So she moved west. She so loved all that I told her that when she opened a shop here on Wilshire Boulevard, she called it after my sister’s name. My sister’s name is Daphne, so she called it The Daphne Shop. Here she ran it for several years and then she sold it and moved into the Wilshire Hotel in Beverly. She had the most wonderful shop right at the entrance as you enter the hotel. She gave it up, she sold it out this past February, and now she’s opened a new one, or will open next month at the Disneyland Hotel in Disneyland. So we were out last night for dinner and I had to tell her, because I haven’t told it to anyone but my wife. So she does not know my friend Jimmy. He was born in Italy; she was born in Russia. I have had them both home but not together. I’ve gone to their homes, but I did not meet them there. They do not know each other.
But in my dream, here is Vera, a lady, she’s quite small, about fifty years old in my dream and he is about fifty years old, handsome, wonderful, well put together as he is always. She is his mother in my dream. She has her arms around me and she’s holding me and hugging me in a nice friendly way. But he is disturbed and he scolds her for showing such feeling towards me. She’s still holding me and holding me tightly and with great affection. It annoys him because she is his mother. And so, when he scolds her for showing such obvious affection, she turned to him and said, “And why shouldn’t I?” in a very Russian accent… English but all very Russian, “And why shouldn’t I? He is your father.” Well, the bewilderment on his face when he heard that I am his father. You have never seen such utter bewilderment.
Well, looking at him I started to laugh. I laughed so loudly in my dream, I kept on laughing, and woke myself up laughing. I was still laughing so loudly I woke my wife. It’s now 3:30 in the morning and she said, “What on earth is wrong with you?” I said, “I had a dream. I’ll tell you tomorrow…can’t tell you now.” But I couldn’t go back to sleep, because I had to really complete that laughter. So I went to the living room and sat down in my chair and chuckled and chuckled when I thought of that face. If anyone could have photographed that face and painted it…like a Blake. If Blake had seen that face, he would have painted the expression of utter bewilderment as no one ever could have done it, and all of the museums of the world would be bidding for it now. You’ve never seen such utter confusion.
But, it was a true revelation. If I am the father of David, and that I know that I am, and David is the personification of all the generations of men and their experiences and Jimmy is a man, am I not his father? Am I not the father of humanity if I am the father of the essence of humanity which is David? David is the sum total of all the generations of men and their experiences, and he called me “Father” in fulfillment of scripture, the 89th Psalm (verse 26). If I am David’s father and he is but the personification of all the generations of men and their experiences, am I not Jimmy’s father if he be human, if he be man? So he thought in a secular level and he was so bewildered. He always thought some other person was his father and now he’s stunned beyond measure when he hears from his own mother I am his father.
It’s all the unfolding of scripture. There is nothing but God in this world. And when he unfolds himself in you, you will know it. Those who have not experienced scripture will think you are stark mad, mad as a hatter, because they haven’t experienced scripture. But I tell every one of you, the day will come you will experience it, and you will know you, too, are the father of humanity. Because you are going to be the father of the sum total of all the generations of men personified as a single youth whose name is David. And so, when he calls you “Father” and he’s only the essence, the quintessence of humanity, are you not then the father of humanity?
So in the very last chapter of the Bible, the 22nd of Revelation, “I am the root and the offspring of David.” The creator entered his own creation and then emerged from it, therefore he is now the offspring of it. But by creating it is he not the root, the father of it? And by entering it, not pretending but actually becoming it, with all the limitations of the human flesh and playing all the parts, you don’t come out ‘til the very end has been played. It’s all concerning the end of the drama, and when the end has been played and you’ve played it all, you emerge. Then the essence of the whole vast creative world stands before you as a son called David, and he calls you “Father.” So, you must have now an experience to prove that the creation itself is your son. And the earthly woman states, “He is your father.” Then comes that surprise, because he interprets the statement in terms of a secular world and he always believed another was his father, and “now she tells me that he is my father.” You get it? All this wonderful symbolism unfolds within man.
So here the child comes. It is the most wonderful child. Now listen to his name, “Wonderful Counselor” (Is. 9:6). First of all, the government shall be upon his shoulders, the 22nd chapter, the 22nd verse of Isaiah. The full responsibility, all the authority will now be on his shoulder. He will lock, none shall open; he shall open, and none shall lock. No one can shut it if he opens; no one can open if he shuts it. That’s the responsibility placed upon his shoulder—the government shall be upon his shoulder as told you in the 22nd chapter of Isaiah. Now the names: “Wonderful Counselor”…infinite wisdom now. And what is wisdom? “Christ the wisdom of God.” What is the next one? “Christ the power of God,” so the next name is “Mighty God.” Here Divine Might is now one of his names. Divine Wisdom, Divine Might. Then comes the third name, “Everlasting Father”…Father forever. He is the eternal Father of humanity and the essence of humanity summarized in the eternal youth called David.
Then comes the final title “Prince of Peace.” Not just a cessation of war—it means that too—there’s no more conflict within him. Like my friend the other night who had this wonderful experience, the war is over now. He’s been here with the conflict lasting, and now the war is over. “How long have I been here?” “Two years.” “What have I learned?” “Well, you learned how to move.” Ah, then the war is over. Then I can move from a state of conflict into a state of peace and joy. So here now, the “Prince of Peace” is his name, a full, complete enjoyment of everything in this world, no conflict, none whatsoever. And these are his four names. Then you are told, “Of his reign there shall be no end…none whatsoever.”
So all of this takes place in the individual. God actually participates in the history of man and is known in those through whom this work is unfolding. And in you I say it is unfolding. His divine purpose, his timeless purpose is working in time. So while walking in time, his timeless purpose is unfolding within you. Everyone will experience it and no one will fail, because God became us, each of us, that we, each of us, may become God.
No let us go into the Silence.
___(??) “I am the rose of Sharon” and then a great exam. And then the answer is so obvious that no one need prompt you. There’s no idiot’s box, no prompter. The answer stands before you in the form of the risen Christ. The greatest thing in the world is love, and he is that very rose of Sharon, the lily of the valleys. And his was a golden rose.
Now, we only have one lecture next week and I think it’s on Tuesday. You can check me, I think it’s Tuesday. There’ll just be one lecture, that’s all. Then we start…I think we have two the following week…but you have a little program and you’ll know. Do check so you will not come here, as some have come, nights that we’re not here. Now are there any questions, please?
Q: Neville, could you relate how you discovered___(??) before you went to Barbados, when you were traveling in your imaginative body, and you were in an undesirable situation, and you felt your way back on the bed. You felt the sheets and instantly you were returned to your body. You said that in the event that this happens to you, the way back is to feel your way back. And so I had this experience of being on a battlefield and there were dogs and serpents plus men with guns. And I wondered what I was doing there? Then I remembered that my body was on my bed, the garment that I wore, so I began to get the message of what you had once said. So I said I’ll try it. I tried it and sure enough I felt the sheet under me. I couldn’t understand how you came upon this revelation of feeling as your way back.
A: Well, thank you, Ben. I’m so glad that in the very depth of your soul you remembered the teaching. That was revealed to me one night, oh, many years ago, when I found myself on the beach in some…oh, it wasn’t the West Indies because we aren’t that primitive. We have far more cultivated land then the things of the far Pacific, the little islands. The West Indies are really…they’ve been under a certain governmental rule of the Western world for over 300-odd years. In fact, they were discovered before this land, and so, little Barbados has had the same flag since 1605. Never had a change of government and we had the same parliamentary system since 1625. We had the same thing that England has only on a miniature scale, and ___(??) law and order. So I knew it was not in the West Indies. I’ve gone to all the islands in the West Indies. So I thought it was somewhere in a far more primitive area, where they were up on stilts, the houses were on stilts.
I saw this strange animal approaching and as it approached me I was wading in water. I put my hands around a pillar. The bridge was already gone, and only the pillars remained. There were piles down to the…to support a bridge. I felt that I was dreaming about this ___(??). I felt that if I could hold on to it and not let go and force myself to wake, I either would wake in the dream or I would wake. But, the funny part about it, I woke in the dream, and now the whole thing is just like this. I am right in the dream. So waking in the dream to this dream, and this strange, peculiar monster, an animal, is coming towards me, but we’re separated by water. And then the emotion of fear in some strange way brought me back to my body on the bed.
Well, then when this other thing happened that I recorded in the book, I was not really in an unpleasant situation, but I had unfinished business on earth. I had an unfinished schooling for my child; she was in high school and she had desires to go through college, and I hadn’t left the proper sums of money invested well for my wife. That’s my obligation in life…to cushion my wife. That was my responsibility when I married her. And so, I felt these were unfinished things. I must come back and do this. I cannot make my exit now, because of these two outstanding unfinished pieces of business in my life. I remembered that holding on to the pillar and as I held on to it I awoke in the water, completely awake like this. So when I did, I imagined I was holding on to a pillow…this time not a cement pillar but a pillow under my head. And I could feel that feeling that I would feel were I waking on a pillow. Then I actually came back to find myself cataleptic. In a little while…and you know the story…I could open my eye after several seconds and then a little while later…I came back. So I discovered that feeling is the secret. One can feel something even though it’s not visible to the mortal eye, and if you can feel it and accept its reality based upon what you are feeling, you’ll get it. It will come to pass. Everything is here: “Eternity exists and all things in eternity independent of creation.” So you simply move into a state where you can feel. You can feel anything. As you feel it, if you accept it as fact, though to you it’s only a subjective fact, it will in time become in an objective fact.
So in your case thank you Ben for telling me that you had the experience, and you remembered. The one thing all through scripture is the constant call to remember. Son, remember when he called upon Abraham to send someone and ___(??) is his son. And he asked him to remember what he did, just remember. Well, they notified my brothers…for if they were not listening to Moses, why should they listen to me? If one rose from the dead, they wouldn’t believe. So he’s called upon to remember. If man could only remember…like my friend the other night. He had a feeling that there must have been a lapse of time somewhere, because I told him they’re doing the same now that they were doing this time last year. Well, he couldn’t remember, therefore, he must have had a lapse of memory…so, again the call to remember.
Oh, could man but remember, for this whole thing was shown man in the beginning before he started the journey. “Everything was shown me, naught could I foresee”—but in the very end of the drama—“I learned how the wind would sound after these things should be.”
So until next week, thank you!
In this lecture, Neville Goddard masterfully reinterprets biblical narratives as allegories for inner spiritual processes. Each patriarch—Abraham, Moses, David—and each prophetic vision is shown to represent stages of consciousness through which the divine child is born in the individual. This eschatological reading shifts attention from historical events to personal realization, aligning with Neville’s core teaching that imagination shapes reality.
Through vivid scriptural exegesis, Goddard highlights the symbolic power of the child: as a prototype of divine promise fulfilled within the self. The lecture frames the child’s birth as a sign, rather than a literal event, pointing to an experiential moment when one recognizes Christ as the embodiment of love, wisdom, and power emerging from one’s own consciousness.
Neville’s use of personal anecdotes and correspondences deepens the practical application of his metaphysics. The “great exam” metaphor demystifies the spiritual test: one simply recognizes the risen Christ within and responds with love. Dreams of the child and the rose illustrate the weavings of symbolic imagery in the subconscious, confirming the scriptural truths Neville expounds.
Finally, the lecture underscores the necessity of remembrance and attentiveness. By recalling his teaching on returning from out-of-body experiences through tactile sensation, Goddard reinforces the power of inner awareness. The audience is invited not merely to listen but to participate in the unfolding of scripture in their own lives, culminating in the personal, transformative experience of the miraculous child.
